Kazushi Ono 大野 和士

Kazushi Ono is the definitive musical citizen of the world. He was born in Tokyo, studied in Munich and forged his early career in Zagreb, Karlsruhe and Tokyo. These influences shaped an inquiring and profound musical intellect and an ability to communicate meaning across languages and cultures—and that reflects in his programs today.

SPOTLIGHT ON TWO MUSICAL HEROES

“This spring, I’ll conduct two monumental works: Bruckner’s Seventh and Schubert’s Ninth, both inspired by their musical heroes. Schubert’s Ninth reflects Beethoven’s influence, quoting his Ninth Symphony in the finale, while adding Schubert’s lyrical touch. Bruckner’s Seventh, inspired by Wagner and completed after his death, features the Wagner tuba, created for Wagner’s operas and used here for the first time in a symphony.”

MOZART’S CONCERTOS: A MUSICAL DIARY

“For Mozart, piano concertos are like a diary of his life. Among the 27 works, Nos. 15, 21, and 24 (1784–1786) stand out, showcasing an increasingly dramatic balance where the orchestra takes on a central role. As a conductor, it’s thrilling to guide this dialogue, allowing piano and orchestra to shine equally.”

CELEBRATING YOUNG TALENT

“I also look forward to conducting the Queen Elisabeth Competition. Young soloists chasing their dreams and freedom with all their skills are a true celebration of artistry and ambition.”
