Ralph Vaughan Williams • Suite for Viola and small orchestra

Viola magic

“Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Suite for Viola and Small Orchestra is a wonderfully crafted work that showcases the singing, rich qualities of the viola. For me, this piece is a perfect example of Vaughan Williams’ deep understanding of the viola, offering a rich, intimate dialogue between the soloist and the ensemble. Whenever I practice or perform it, I feel transported to the English countryside on a beautiful spring day, surrounded by lush greenery with a quiet stream flowing nearby.“

Lyrical potential

“The piece is structured in eight movements (divided into three sections), each exploring different moods and colours. It blends folk-like melodies and English pastoral themes, a signature of Vaughan Williams’ style, with more classical forms. The orchestration is delicate, allowing the viola’s warm tone to shine through without being overpowered by the orchestra. The work reveals some of the composer’s most fluid and melodious writing, offering a true showcase of his inventive use of the viola’s lyrical potential.“

Pre-concert rituals

“One quirky habit I have before going on stage is making jokes and laughing with those around me. It helps keep me grounded and ensures I bring my true self to the performance. I’m lighthearted in everyday life, and I like to carry that same energy with me onto the stage, so I can perform authentically.“

Music as an identity

“Music is a constant presence in my life, even beyond rehearsals. Whether I’m exploring new pieces or revisiting favourite recordings, it keeps me deeply connected to my creativity. I’ve come to realize that music is not just my job or my passion; it has become an integral part of my identity. This sentiment is perfectly captured by Leonard Bernstein’s quote: “Life without music is meaningless; music without life is academic.”

From Coltrane to the Beatles

“I really enjoy listening to old recordings of John Coltrane, Beatles, Peggy Lee, but recently I’ve developed a deep appreciation for popular music from the 1940s. For instance, Maybe by the Ink Spots has captured my interest with its beautiful, lush harmonies and those sweet, soulful captivating voices that can melt anyone’s heart.“

Free time

“I recently immersed myself in chess, a game I’ve always found fascinating but never had the time to explore deeply. Two months ago, I made the decision to invest my time in learning the techniques and tactics of proper play, and I haven’t looked back since. In my free time, I always try spending quality moments with my family, who continually inspire me.“
