Four ascending notes, followed by two finger snaps—that's all it takes to set the tone.

The opening theme of the TV series The Addams Family is iconic. So when the series was adapted for the big screen in 1991, that melody had to be included. The responsibility fell to Broadway composer Marc Shaiman.

In a special episode of our podcast series De Klankband, Shaiman sits down with film journalist Robin Broos to reflect on his first major Hollywood assignment. He also shares stories from other projects, including When Harry Met Sally..., the musical Hairspray, the Mary Poppins sequel, the South Park movie, and the songs he wrote for Steve Martin in the third season of Only Murders in the Building.
