Hayoung Choi, born in 1998 in Bielefeld, ended as first laureate in the Queen Elisabeth Competition 2022. Besides this, her record includes several awards including the first prize in the International Krzysztof Penderecki Cello Competition, the International Johannes Brahms Competition and the Yewon Competition in Korea.
Choi has collaborated with, among others, Boston Philharmonic and the Camerata Salzburg, and as a chamber musician, she shared performances with renowned musicians such as Jörg Widmann, Mitsuko Uchida and Martin Helmchen.
Credit for the first true concerto for cello goes to Robert Schumann. The work has become immensely popular, thanks primarily to its originality and range of emotions – from a quiet intimacy to carefree joviality. But also as a result of the support of a succession of top soloists who have placed this concerto on their repertoire and taken it around the world.
