Aimez-vous Schönberg? Although we generally associate the man with his sometimes somewhat calculated twelve-tone technique, there is a wealth of repertoire that is rarely heard, as Schönberg's image is often overshadowed by his association with dodecaphony. Yet works like Verklärte Nacht reveal his strong connection to symbolism, and thus also to Debussy.

Even after a century and a half, the name Arnold Schönberg still inspires fear in some people. The festival Aimez-vous Schönberg celebrates his jubilee year and will probably help you break free of that phobia.

For the younger Arnold built on Wagner and Brahms, or drew inspiration from the new art movements around him. And, like Debussy, he was often influenced by poets and could just as easily look over his shoulder romantically- as in Verklärte Nacht in which he places love at the centre.

"His Chamber Symphony No.1 was part of the programme of the famous ‘Scandal concert’ in 1913, which Schoenberg himself conducted. Shocked by the radicalness of the music, the audience began to riot during the concert. The music is played by a small orchestra, so you will hear all the details and feel very close to it.
