The Brussels Philharmonic returns to the Concertgebouw with Rachmaninov’s richly orchestrated Symphonic Dances. Before the intermission, rising star Njioma Chinyere Grevious will make her debut performing Coleridge-Taylor’s lyrical Violin Concerto—the same work that earned her victory at the prestigious Sphinx Competition in Detroit in 2023.

Following last year’s celebrated visit, the Brussels Philharmonic once again crowns its concert season with a memorable journey to Amsterdam. This time, the programme spotlights Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances, a composition where the Russian virtuoso, renowned for his dazzling piano concertos, fully exploits the orchestral palette with dramatic contrasts and imaginative tonal textures.
Njioma Chinyere Grevious, whose compelling interpretation of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Violin Concerto earned her international acclaim, now marks her debut at the Concertgebouw with this relatively obscure masterpiece. Coleridge-Taylor, the English composer of African heritage celebrated for his epic cycle The Song of Hiawatha, crafted this impassioned concerto as a testament to his evocative, rhapsodic musical language—a work that, after years of neglect, is finally being rediscovered by modern audiences.
