The first science fiction film ever was ‘Metropolis’ from the filmmaker Fritz Lang. A megaproduction from 1927 that would become not only the most expensive and most famous German film in history, but also one of the milestones of cinema history: no fewer than 36,000 extras and 500 miniature skyscrapers were needed.

The Argentinian composer Martin Matalon wrote a new score in 1995 for Metropolis, on commission for IRCAM Paris. With the rhythmic structure of the film as its framework, he weaves a fine interlace of image and sound, resulting in a surprisingly colourful music that closely relies on jazz.
